Sardines to protect the heart

Every spring and summer, thousands and thousands of “chringuitos” (sea side restaurants) prepare their wide fish offer all over Spanish Coast. Among the variety of delicious dishes, something that you cannot miss is the “espetos”, a sort of the roast sardines cooked as you can see in the first image. Anyway, it’s very common to do the fires directly on the sand. But authorities are encouraging to set them in special devices, or in an old boat, so that the beach can remain clean and tidy.

The sardines contains lots and lots of “omega 3” fatty acids (good fats), that protect the heart and prevent the stroke. Normally sardines are accompanies by red wine and traditional unrefined bread (do not confuse with the commercial integral bread, not very recommendable, as it is made out of refined flour added with bran, but without the wheat germ).

Fresh sardines are not always at home and are difficult to manipulate, due to its strong odour. You can have canned sardines instead, that have similar properties and calcium, as you eat the bone as well. But try to get sardines preserved in olive oil or, better, virgin olive oil.
