If your diet deviates from the balanced principles of the Mediterranean Diet, you may encounter various health issues, even if your calorie intake matches or falls below your expenditure. Here are the potential problems:

a) If your diet is excessively high in proteins, you may be at risk of developing gout, a condition characterized by inflammation of the joints, particularly in the feet and hands.

b) If your diet contains excessive amounts of fat, you may be at risk of suffering from heart diseases, diabetes, weight gain, and more.

c) If your diet is disproportionately rich in carbohydrates, apart from diabetes, your body’s structural integrity may suffer due to a lack of proteins. Additionally, your metabolism could be adversely affected by insufficient intake of essential lipids and vitamins.

d) An imbalanced diet can lead to cravings, constant hunger, depression, or fatigue. If weight loss is your goal, it’s advisable to seek guidance from a doctor.

As a rule of thumb, aim to derive proteins from fish, fats from unsaturated sources, and carbohydrates from vegetables, pasta, rice, and bread, while minimizing consumption of sweets and avoiding adding sugar to beverages like coffee.

Occasionally, on special occasions, and if you’re not actively trying to lose weight, you can indulge in a variety of natural treats. However, be cautious of trans fats found in products like margarines and other hydrogenated fats. Opt for homemade or carefully selected commercial products, as many prepared foods may contain hidden trans fats.

The Mediterranean Diet not only caters to your physical health but also satisfies psychological desires for delicious foods. Be wary of misleading claims about the health benefits of certain products, such as margarine being healthier than butter due to its vegetable oil content. In reality, the hydrogenation process used in margarine production can render it harmful. In countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain, the deterioration of the diet can be attributed to the proliferation of such commercial products. It’s essential to scrutinize food labels and make informed choices about what you consume.
